Basketball: Brown pick

Notre Dame's a good bet to make it 27 consecutive victories at the Joyce Center tonight, though it probably won't be quite as easy as it's been in recent games.Brown, which comes in with a 6-4 record, starts three seniors and two juniors and likely won't be intimidated by playing at Notre Dame, especially with the students away on break. (I'm not at the game tonight, but I was in the area earlier and it seemed that most of St. Joseph County was out shopping, so I doubt there will be a big crowd at the Joyce.) Brown lost by...

Basketball: San Francisco pick

I'm back from vacation and at press row at the Joyce Center just in time to see San Francisco's eye-abusing yellow uniforms and say ...Notre Dame 87, San Francisco 66.

Big recruiting catch

Notre Dame's 22nd verbal commitment for the Class of 2008 is a big one: 6-foot-6, 305-pound offensive lineman Trevor Robinson of Elkhorn, Neb.Robinson, as you're probably aware, committed to Nebraska in April, then re-opened his recruiting to include the Irish and Michigan. He's rated as the 97th-best player in the country by rivals.com, and the third-best offensive guard. Scout.com has him rated the sixth-best player in the nation at his position.

Haywood not Houston's choice

Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Haywood apparently won't be the next coach at the University of Houston. That would be Oklahoma assistant coach Kevin Sumlin.Haywood, a native Houstonian, interviewed for the job and was believed to be one of two finalists with ex-Cougars coach Jack Pardee, but Sumlin swooped in and won the job.In other coaching news, former Irish quarterbacks coach David Cutcliffe is Duke's top choice to be the next coach of the Blue Devils.

Basketball: Northern Illinois pick

Notre Dame showed a lot of grit in its win over Kansas State on Tuesday night, answering runs by the Wildcats on a couple different occasions to earn a victory it hopes will be valuable in March. (I'm not so sure K-State is quite as good an all-around team as we were led to believe, but maybe the Irish just made them look that way Tuesday at the Garden.)Now, if the Irish need to show the same level of toughness tonight against Northern Illinois, something will be terribly wrong. The Huskies, in their first season under former Colorado coach Ricardo...

Basketball: Kansas State pick

Like you probably are, I'm anxious to get a look at Wildcats freshman Michael Beasley. Something tells me Notre Dame's going to see too much of him tonight at Madison Square Garden. Here's where Notre Dame's non-conference schedule may come back to hurt them. Not only haven't the Irish not seen an inside player anywhere near Beasley's caliber, they haven't really played many teams with any sort of inside presence, good or bad. They definitely haven't seen a team as good as K-State. The Wildcats, meanwhile, just played Oregon.Notre Dame has played well recently at MSG and really needs a win...

Basketball: Eastern Michigan pick

Will Notre Dame lose a game in which it has a chance to break the school record for consecutive home victories?I don't see it happening. The Irish are just moving and shooting the ball too well right now (against teams they're not playing in the Virgin Islands, anyway), to slip up tonight against Eastern Michigan, which comes into the game at 3-3 with victories over Radford, Manhattan and St. Bonaventure. Once again, Notre Dame is up against a team without a whole lot of height and scoring punch.I'm not sure this game means a whole lot when it comes to determining...
