Indoor Rowing: Lehman second at world championships

BOSTON — Elkhart’s Merritt Lehman placed second in his age division Sunday at the C.R.A.S.H.-B World Indoor Rowing Championships held at Boston University.

Lehman, 69, earned a silver medal int he veteran men’s division (ages 65-69). He covered 2,000 meters in 7 minutes, 23.1 seconds. The winner, Denmark’s Leif Christian, posted a time of 7:17.5.

A first-time world championships competitor, Lehman trains at East Lake Athletic Club in Elkhart. He qualified for the worlds in Long Beach, Calif. The qualifying standard in his division is 7:29.5. His qualifying time was 7:22.1

“I had to work real hard to get my times down,” said Lehman. “I just started rowing a couple of years ago.”
