ELKHART — Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department officers arrested a number of people over the weekend on charges including illegal consumption of alcohol, drug possession and driving while intoxicated.

The biggest incident, in number of arrests, was an underage drinking party in the 28000 block of Warren Avenue, Elkhart, at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday. Police were notified that people were outdoors yelling and asking others if they wanted to smoke marijuana.

When officers arrived, a man identified as Cody Mort, 18, of Elkhart, ran from Patrol Officer Jeremy Overmyer into the house, reported Lt. Travis Adamson. Officers found several people younger than 21 outside and inside the house who had been drinking alcoholic beverages.

Mort, Dakota Runyan, 18, Victor Martinez, 18, and Emilio Forrest, 18, were cited at the scene on preliminary charges of illegal consumption of an alcoholic beverage. Adamson said at least five other people at the house ranged in age from 15 to 17. Mort was taken to the Elkhart County Jail. The others were cited into court and the minors were released to their parents.

Patrol Officer Dustin Lundgren stopped a vehicle on C.R. 17, north of C.R. 10, at about 12;40 a.m. Sunday after the vehicle exceeded the posted speed limit next to the officer. After the vehicle was stopped, the driver, Adam Young, 25, of Bristol, backed his vehicle into the patrol car, Adamson said. The patrol car was not damaged.

Young was incarcerated on a preliminary charge of operating while intoxicated, with a blood alcohol level of .21 percent, police reported. He also was cited for speeding.

In other incidents over the weekend:

• Phillip Liberty, 49, of Elkhart, was arrested on a preliminary felony possession of marijuana charge after a traffic stop at about 6 p.m. Friday at Edwardsburg Avenue and Michigan Street in Elkhart. Police said Liberty, a passenger in the vehicle, had more than 40 grams of marijuana with him.

• Seth Jordan, 20, of Wakarusa, was arrested on a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana after a traffic stop at about 12:50 a.m. Saturday on S.R. 15, south of C.R. 40, Goshen. A handgun found in the vehicle was reported stolen earlier in a case through Elkhart city police. An investigation into the stolen gun is continuing.

• Steven Ratliff, 41, and Stephanie Fireline, 40, both of Elkhart, were arrested after a traffic stop at 1:50 a.m. Sunday near Old U.S. 33 and S.R. 19, Elkhart. Fireline, a passenger in the vehicle, was arrested on a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana. Ratliff, the vehicle’s driver, was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia and possession of methamphetamine.
