Hundreds of buyers turn out for Carriage auction

By midday, 785 bidders had registered for the event, about 250 had signed up Monday, another 220 were bidding online and more were straggling into the office.
The assets of the luxury fifth wheel maker went on the auction block at 9 this morning on the company’s campus on Wabash Street. Carriage collapsed under financial strain, closing its doors in October.
The buildings have been cleaned and freshly swept in preparation of today’s event and the lots of equipment, supplies and partially-built units are neatly organized and tagged with yellow pieces of paper.
When the staff from Myron Bowling Auctioneers arrived a little after 7 a.m., they found many potential buyers waiting. Shortly before noon, every available parking space, whether on pavement or grass, was crammed with cars and trucks.
Buyers have come from as far as the United Kingdom and Australia.
A team of auctioneers clustered atop a mobile auction stand is moving from one lot to the next from one building to the next, selling the items to the highest bidder. A total of 5,114 lots are listed in the auction catalog.
Officials from Myron Bowling said all the assets are scheduled to be auctioned today.
