Shrove Tuesday/LENTEN EVENTS

The ladies of St. John of the Cross in Bristol will meet at 11:30 a.m. today at Olive Garden in Elkhart for the Annual Ladies Luncheon. For Shrove Tuesday, the church will have a pancake supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday For a freewill donation, enjoy pancakes, applesauce, sausage and a beverage. For more information on the supper call 848-7114. Ash Wednesday will be observed with the Imposition of Ashes at 6:30 p.m. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Carol Fleming, priest in charge.

St. James Episcopal Church, 1105 S. Sixth St., Goshen, will hold a Shrove Tuesday pancake and sausage supper from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Information: 533-4984.

An Ash Wednesday service is planned for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel United Methodist Church, 1200 N. Michigan St., Elkhart.



ASSISTANCE

Agape Baptist Church Food Pantry, 248 W. Wolf Ave., is open from 6 to 8 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month. Information: the Rev. Dannel Brown, pastor, at 266-7670.

Augustana Lutheran Church, 1133 Kilbourn St., serves a meal from 5 to 6 p.m. every Monday for individuals and families who are unemployed or underemployed.

Christ’s Commissary Food Pantry is open from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. and 6 to 7:15 p.m. the first and third Thursday of each month. Clients may come every 30 days. Clothing and household goods are available whenever donated. The pantry is at First Brethren Church of Elkhart, 24197 C.R. 16 E. Church Without Walls, 731 Wagner Ave., food pantry/clothes closet open from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays and Thursdays. Clients may come once a month for food and weekly for clothing. For questions or concerns, clients may call the church at 293-0776 and ask for Felicia.

Clothed in Compassion, C.R. 6 at C.R. 19, Bristol, a program of Zion Lutheran Church, is open from 9 a.m. to noon the first and third Saturdays of each month (or by appointment). Gently used clothes and shoes for the whole family, free, no questions asked.

Elkhart Community Senior Outreach site gives out canned food and clothing from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, 802 W. Garfield Ave. Leave your name and phone number. Information: Dell Davis at 250-9827 or Mary at 293-6490.

St. James AME Church, 122 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, has a food and clothing ministry. MEETINGS/INSTRUCTION

The public is invited to the upcoming campaign series “Not a fan, becoming a completely committed follower of Christ” at Clinton Frame Mennonite Church, 63846 C.R. 35, Goshen. First Presbyterian Church of Elkhart is offering a series of worship services and classes on the question of the compatibility of faith and science. The Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend will host the 2012 Diocesan Marriage and Family Conference on March 24 at the Notre Dame Conference Center. Nappanee Missionary Church on S.R. 19 is offering Divorce Care at 7 p.m. each Wednesday for approximately 13 weeks; you may join the group at any time during the program. There is no cost and child care is available. If you have experienced the pain of separation and divorce, you are encouraged to attend. Divorce Care focuses on the biblical approach to divorce, separation and related issues. Nappanee United Methodist Church, 301 W. Market St., announces a public affairs discussion group from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. the last Wednesday of each month, concluding Oct. 31, just before the national elections. Discussion themes will include issues of international, national, state and local importance — all within the context of individual Christians’ voices, roles and responsibilities in addressing societal divisiveness and in fostering national reconciliation. Discussions will be led by church member and career U.S. Ambassador David Swartz. Guest speakers — including academics, journalists and elected officials — will also be invited to participate. The meetings will be preceded by the church’s Wednesday community evening meal (starting at 5:30 p.m.). Following the dinner there are activities for children as well as adults.
