ELKHART — County police arrested a man trying to sell stolen items to a scrap metal business only a few hours after the owner reported them stolen Wednesday.

Mark E. Kauffman, 28, of Elkhart, was arrested on a preliminary felony charge of possession of stolen property, according to a report from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Officers responded to a burglary on Santa Anita Street south of Elkhart around noon Wednesday. The man who owned the property reported the theft of metal objects, mostly vehicle parts, from his yard, including a transmission, steering box, black racing hood, heavy duty jack stand, metal beam and a length of chain, according to the report.

Around 1:30 p.m., officers responded to Elkhart Metal Recycling, 57974 C.R. 3, Elkhart, regarding someone attempting to sell those items. Police confirmed the identity of the items and returned them to the owner.
