ELKHART — The two Elkhart County judges whose jobs are on the ballot this year hope to retain their seats.

Judge Stephen Bowers of Elkhart Superior Court 2 announced his run for re-election, and Judge David Bonfiglio of Elkhart Superior Court 6 filed his paperwork to seek his seat again.

Bowers is finishing his first six-year elected term on the bench. A long-time civil and criminal-defense attorney before taking the bench, Bowers pointed to that experience as the reason he’s been able to reduce backlogs in his court and increase the speed at which cases move in his court. “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as a judge in Elkhart County,” Bowers said in a written announcement of his candidacy.

Bonfiglio has been judge of Superior Court 6 since the court was introduced nearly 12 years ago. Before that he served as the Elkhart County Juvenile Magistrate for 16 years.

Bonfiglio is overseeing a grant from the state to improve access for families in the local court system.

Both men are Republicans.
