While winter has traditionally brought with it increased traffic at the mission, this season has seen far fewer people utilizing its services.
The mission is equipped with 152 beds for single men and women, as well as families. If necessary, they also can place 25 or more men and six women on the floor. The winter months have in the past seen beds full and 20 to 25 people sleeping on the floor. This year, however, the mission has not had a problem finding places for residents to stay. In early December, the mission actually had such a dip in population that there were beds available.
Since that time, the beds have again been filled, with an additional handful of people on the floor, but not near the number that are required for Faith Mission to be considered at full capacity.
Winter has only just begun, however, and a turn in weather could change circumstances at any time.
“People tend to come inside when it snows,” said Michael Perez, director of development for Faith Mission. “In years past we’ve even had the full maximum on the floors.” During very hard winters, the mission has even placed people in the chapel. But no matter the weather, Perez says the mission always tries to find places for people to stay.
“Typically, we’ll just take [residents] anyway,” Perez said, even if the mission is filled. No matter what the weather is like outside, the Faith Mission will provide a safe place for people to stay.
