ELKHART — This year's Elkhart Science Fair had a repeat champion.

Erin Greising, a fifth grader at Cornerstone Christian Montessori, won Best of Show for her project “Is ‘Chemobrain' a Transient State? A Study of Cancer Survivors.”

She won last year for her project, “Chemobrain? Handicap or excuse?” which also tackled chemotherapy-related short-term memory loss in cancer patients. Best of grade level winners included Clay Grubbs, a student at Pinewood Elementary and who won Best of Grade Level for K-2 for his project “Electromagnetic Power,” Nick Emerson, a student at Cleveland Elementary, and who won Best of Grade Level 3-5 for his project “Light to power: the angle matters,” and Megan Wyse, a student at North Side Middle School, who won Best of Grade Level for 6-8 for her project “Mixin it up.”

Greising, who said she wants to be a neuropsychologist, loves every part of the science fair, especially her subjects.

“It's just really fun meeting new people,” she said.

Coordinator of the Elkhart Science Fair David Emery celebrated his last science fair. He will be retiring after 26 years in that position and 42 years of teaching.

Parents thanked Emery for his work with their children, some of them recounting how he helped them when they were students. When he finished announcing the winners, they rose to give him a standing ovation.

Emery said he will miss meeting new students and sharing his love for science.

“I just love watching them light up when they talk about their projects,” he said.
