NAPPANEE -- It wasn't just that Landon Fergison made like a freight train while roaring straight up the middle of Andrews Field, but that nobody from NorthWood made an attempt to slow down that freight.

Fergison's bone-rattling hit right as the Panthers' Derek Yoder attempted to field a punt jarred the ball loose and "sealed the deal," as Jimtown coach Mike Campbell put it, during the Jimmies' 16-7 Class 3A sectional championship win over the home team on a beautiful football Friday.

Jimtown (11-1) -- in its first-ever season in 3A -- won its second straight sectional title, fourth in five years and 19th overall, advancing to a regional showdown next week at home against first-time opponent Andrean (9-3).

Fergison's monster play from his long snapper position with 2:09 remaining came with the Jims nursing a 10-7 lead and surging NorthWood having scored on its previous possession. Sophomore Dustin Chafin recovered what was the game's only fumble.

"The middle linebacker was saying don't block (No.) 63, don't block 63, so as soon as I snapped the ball, I knew I was going to try to get down there," Fergison said. "As soon as I hit the kid -- and I did see him make the catch -- my mind went blank, I couldn't hear the crowd, nothing, but I saw the fumble, and I was trying to get the fumble, too.

"It's just the most exciting play of my life."

"There's not too many kids 200 pounds and runs like he does," Campbell said of Fergison, a junior. "We told him all week that sometimes they don't block (the center). They let him go, and he went down and made the most of it."

The Jimmies thus regained possession, at the Panther 27.

Then on fourth-and-6 at the NorthWood 23, quarterback Brian Hosinski faked an inside handoff and rolled left untouched for a touchdown and the final score with 27 seconds remaining.

"Our defense was great tonight," said Fergison after Jimtown held an opponent to seven or fewer points for the seventh time this season. "And our O-line was great. Everybody was great. Everybody played their butts off."

"If you'd have told me we'd keep NorthWood off the board except for one (score), I'd have said you're crazy the way they've been playing lately," Campbell said, "but give credit to our defense, and Ned Cook and the rest of the defensive coaches."

The Jims led 10-0 before Tony Miranda caught a 27-yard TD pass from Brant Nine with 5:04 remaining.

The Panthers (7-5) then held Jimtown to one first down to set up a potential two-minute drive, a scenario that was erased by Fergison.

"We were in the game, but defensively, we didn't play well enough to give our offense many chances, and offensively, we had too many three-and-outs and an interception," Panther coach Scott Hoover said. "You know points are going to be a premium in this game, but you have to give yourself a chance. We didn't really do that."

Junior Nick Letrola carried 27 times for 120 yards to help give the Jims a handful of clock-chewing possessions. Letrola, who had been limited to 55 yards on 16 carries during Jimtown's season-opening 13-10 overtime win at NorthWood, surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the year.

The Jims led 3-0 at halftime on Tyler Zufan's 23-yard field goal.

Freshman Devan Emerson then returned the third-quarter kickoff 49 yards to the Panther 35 to help set up Jimtown's lone TD of the night, an 8-yard run by Drew Zeiger.

The Jimmies won for the sixth straight time at Andrews Field and improved to 10-4 overall against their neighboring rival. It was the first-ever postseason game between the teams.

In Andrean, Jimtown will encounter a club that has won seven of its last eight games with the lone loss being 25-21 to 4A power Lowell (12-1).
