SONOMA, Calif. -- Three races, three weeks. Denver, Seattle, Sonoma, Calif.
The NHRA calls it the Western Swing.
Only six pro drivers can say they've won it. Only one driver still has a chance to join the list.
Antron Brown.
After victories in Denver and Seattle, Brown enters the Fram-Autolite Nationals with a 137-point series lead over the last driver to win the Swing, five-time defending Top Fuel champ Tony Schumacher.
"I mean, it's a lot of pressure," Brown said Friday after the first round of qualifying at Infineon Raceway. "The thing about it is, I don't think about it as one big entity. What we did, we just broke it down one race at a time."
Brown, once a Pro Stock Motorcycle rider for Don Schumacher, jumped to Top Fuel in 2008 and won two races with crew chief Lee Beard.
Former Funny Car driver Mike Ashley bought the team from David Powers in January, and Beard returned to Schumacher's operation as general manager. To replace Beard, a veteran tuner, Ashley named a pair of crew chiefs -- Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald.
"When you add two geniuses like Brian and Mark to the bunch, it's like adding two more doses of sugar," said Brown, 33, from Pittsboro. "It made the deal that much sweeter, you know what I mean?"
Brown responded to the changes by qualifying No. 1 at the Winternationals, the season-opener in Pomona, Calif. Although he finished runner-up to Doug Kalitta, he beat Brandon Bernstein for the Wally two weeks later in Phoenix.
Now, after dumping Schumacher in the finals at Seattle, Brown's numbers look like this:
Wins -- Four (Phoenix, St. Louis, Denver and Seattle).
No. 1 qualifiers -- 5.
Winning percentage -- .773 (35-10).
Starting line winning percentage -- .690 (29-13).
If Brown can win four more rounds of racing this weekend, he'll join Joe Amato, John Force, Cory McClenathan, Larry Dixon, Greg Anderson and Tony Schumacher as the only drivers to win the Western Swing.
"The thing about is it's a history landmark because only six drivers in the history of NHRA have done it," Brown said. "To be part of that elite group would be awesome, but you can't think about the future or the long term. We focus on each and every round."
Qualifying concludes today, with eliminations Sunday.
