The eTruth.com crime map gives readers a chance to see where crime is happening in their community.
For years, Elkhart Truth reporters have gone to local police stations or gathered information via phone or fax to put together stories and short items on crimes in the area.
Now police departments are able to send data files by e-mail that can be mapped and analyzed. As we get more data, trends will become apparent. Crimes can be mapped and graphed by date, type and location.
The Elkhart Truth’s weekly crime map runs in the Friday paper, but this version online is available 24/7 and can be tailored so you can see your neighborhood. Information is entered as it’s received from local police departments, but there may be some lag between incidents and posting on the map or in the newspaper.
To use this map:
Select a crime category. You can choose more than one or even all of them. The category called “other” includes crimes that don’t fit within one of the other five categories.
Pick a date range. The broader a range you pick, the more pins you’ll see on the map. You may also experience a longer load time. Crimes in this map start with Aug. 11, 2008, but not all crimes since then may be part of the database, which now includes information from Goshen Police Department, Elkhart Police Department and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.
If you enter an address, you must choose a distance surrounding that address. It will show crimes in a radius from the adress selected. You must type in the city and state for the address. If you don’t enter an address, it will show crimes entered for the entire area. To see more information on an incident, click on the pushpin.
