SHIPSHEWANA -- Catherine A. Smith, 62, of 7925 N. 700 W., died at 12:23 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 17, 2009) in her home after a battle with cancer.
She was born Dec. 30, 1947, in Garrett to James and Rowena "Effie" (Michael) Hatcher. On Nov. 25, 1967, she married Douglas K. Smith in Logansport.
He survives along with one daughter, Kelly (Jerry) Jantzi of Shipshewana; two sons, Darin (Robin) Smith of Goshen and Tim Smith of Shipshewana; two grandchildren; three brothers, James Hatcher of Broad Ripple and John (Cindy) Hatcher and Joseph (Sandy) Hatcher, both of Olive Branch, Miss.; and two sisters, Mary (Rod) Jones and Betty Fowler, both of Logansport.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker who had worked at a salvage yard and ceramic store in White Pigeon, Mich., for two years to earn money for a trip with her brother to Italy. She had attended St. Joseph Catholic Church, White Pigeon, was an avid Notre Dame fan and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Carney-Frost Funeral Home, 603 S. Detroit St., LaGrange, where the funeral service will be Monday at 10 a.m. The Rev. Kenneth Weaver will officiate. Burial will be in Sidener Cemetery, Shipshewana, at a later date.
