GOSHEN -- A short section of C.R. 30 will be closed to through traffic Monday as part of the ongoing C.R. 17 upgrade west of Goshen.
A new section of C.R. 17 is taking shape on a new corridor just west of the existing road, between C.R. 30 and C.R. 32. Spans are to be built over C.R. 30 and C.R. 32 as part of the plans and C.R. 30 will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to accommodate the bridge work there.
The one-day closure for most traffic will be between C.R. 15 and the existing C.R. 17. Still, Doug Brown with Phend and Brown of Milford, the project contractor, said local residential and business traffic will be able to traverse C.R. 30 along the section in question, up to where the new bridge is going in.
The grand C.R. 17 plans call for conversion of the road into a four-lane, north-south arterial through the middle of Elkhart County. The roadway has been already upgraded from the Michigan line to C.R. 28 near northwestern Goshen and efforts continue to the south, currently on the C.R. 30-C.R. 32 section.
As part of the work Monday, crews will place bridge beams across C.R. 30 where the new C.R. 17 intersects the roadway. Beams for the bridge over C.R. 32 to the south probably won't be placed until next year, perhaps around February.
Otherwise, the bulk of excavation for the new C.R. 17 segment is nearing completion. Work over the winter will focus on the two new bridges, with overall completion of the section expected next fall.
Other sections of the new C.R. 17 are to be built in coming years, complementing the C.R. 30 to C.R. 32 work and the upgrades further north on the route.
