More than half of the collisions at public crossings occur where there are active warning devices such as flashing lights and gates, Feder said.
"Every collision between a vehicle or person and a train is preventable," said Ken Gilsdorf, from CSX Transportation.
Indiana Operation Lifesaver has numerous blitzes scheduled across the state during the week, Gilsdorf said, and all laws regarding railroads, including pedestrian trespassing and obeying traffic signals, will be strictly enforced.
Indiana Operation Lifesaver, law enforcement agencies throughout the state, the Indiana Department of Transportation and railroad companies are participating in Rail Safety Week.
Indiana Operation Lifesaver is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating collisions, death and injuries at railroads and railroad crossings.
