The $300,000 project, funded mostly by capital improvement grants, will add 1,600 square feet to the facility.
"Prior to this building expansion, our employees and patients were packed in like sardines," said Dr. James Gingerich, the center's medical director, in a statement. "At times our patients had to wait just because all of the exam rooms were full. But the new exam rooms and office space without equipment are useless."
The Maple City Health Care Center, which uses a sliding pay scale based on a patient's income, receives 25 percent of its operating costs from grants and donations, Hire said. The other 75 percent comes from patients and insurance companies. More than a third of its patients do not have health insurance, according to a press release.
The center, at 213 Middlebury St. in Goshen, will have an open house from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 3 for visitors to tour the renovated office.
