While Barack Obama’s visit to Elkhart put the city in the harsh national spotlight, most national media personalities have been kind.
Even Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” seemed sympathetic to the city’s high unemployment rate and struggling manufacturing industry.
On his Tuesday program, Stewart poked fun at Obama for selling the stimulus plan via a road trip. After showing a MSNBC and Fox News clip announcing Obama’s visit to Elkhart and the city’s standing as the “RV Capital of the World,” Stewart had this to say:
“RV Capital of the World? Wow! You think your town’s got trouble? Imagine your main industry combines the slow down of the auto market with the plunging values in the housing sector.
“Figure out how to put a bank in the trunk, maybe the whole town disappears.”
