  DORIS E. MCDOWELL

   

ELKHART -- Doris E. McDowell, 88, of 2610 Stevens Ave., died at 8:10 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 12, 2008) in Elkhart General Hospital.

She was born April 27, 1919, in Columbus, Ga., to Clifford Henry and Mary Lena (Bishop) Mealor. She married Robert M. McDowell on Dec. 6, 1945, in Dallas, Texas.

He survives, along with one son, Robert J. (Susan) McDowell of Elkhart; two daughters, Carol J. Ouzounian of Elkhart and Doretta J. (Mark) McHugh of Summerville, S.C.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Rachel Oakley of Gainesville, Fla., Betty Jean Skinkle of Atlanta, Ga., Lanell Cofer of Woodstock, Ga., and Florence Greenberg of Charlotte, N.C.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Mealor; and four brothers, Joseph, Malcolm, Leonard and Clinton Mealor.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, 700 E. Jackson Blvd., Elkhart, and one hour prior to Friday's 11 a.m. funeral service at the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. William Hemming of St. Paul's United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.

Mrs. McDowell was a graduate of Columbus Industrial High School. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, White Shrine of Jerusalem 5 and a former life member of American Legion Post 93, Elkhart. She was a member of Starlight Chapter 181 O.E.S., Women's Army Corps, where she served as a medical and surgical technician, and was a charter member of the Women in Military Service for America.
