ELKHART -- The demolition of five vacant homes and the former Church Community Services building began Tuesday.

The properties, on Marion and Third streets, were bought several months ago by Indiana Michigan Power, a subsidiary of American Electric Power.

It could be the site of a future I & M power substation.

"Eventually we would hope to build a substation there," said AEP Communications Manager Marta Elliott.

"That project has been put somewhat on hold due to the economy."

Although the project is on the shelf, Elliott said it was proposed because of a growing community.

"As it's growing, we need to grow as well," she said.

Church Community Services moved into its current, larger facility on Oakland Avenue in April.
