NAPPANEE -- Miracles at Main & Market Streets, in its third year of existence, has become an annual kickoff to the Christmas season.
"This is our third year here, and we like it," said Scott Hoof of Nappanee. "As long as they have this, we'll be here."
Hoof's partner, Esther Miller, reported that Miracles at Main & Market Streets has become a family tradition in their household.
From Santa to Mary and Joseph en route to Bethlehem, Christmas icons were represented in the parade.
Groups in angel costumes were also seen in between Cub Scouts, members of the American Girls Club and other local entries.
A few changes were evident in the parade this year.
LOWER NUMBER PARTICIPATING
The 2009 Miracles on Main & Market Streets Parade was considerably shorter than in years past.
"I think that had a lot to do with how cold it was last year," said Heidi Willis who both enjoyed the parade and noted the length was much shorter than in years past.
Last year, the parade was held in near-freezing temperatures.
NEW ROUTE
During the first two years Miracles on Main & Market Street was held, parade entries traveled 61/2 blocks south through downtown Nappanee, and ended at the Nappanee Train Depot. That route changed this year.
Parade entries gathered on West Lincoln Street, one block south of downtown, and traveled north to end at the Nappanee Public Library.
The new route was chosen due to another change in programming -- the addition of a laser light show held outside the library.
Caroling was heard during and after the parade to help visitors get into the Christmas spirit. Prior to the laser light show, Nappanee Mayor Larry Thompson read "The Christmas Story" over a public address system to remind everyone of the holy inspiration for the holiday.
