ELKHART -- Originally hoping to recruit 50 buglers for a new Veteran’s Day event, Elkhart’s Echo Taps From The Heart drew more than 70 brass players today.
The high turnout made it the second largest Echo Taps event ever, organizers said.
The first taps bugle call was played at the entrance to Rice Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., and one by one, each bugler followed suit.
Spread a few hundred feet apart, players performed the 24 notes on trumpets, bugles, flugelhorns, trombones and even a few tubas.
The instrumental chain ended at Prairie Street Cemetery, where all the performers gathered to play taps en masse at the end of the 11 a.m. Veterans Day ceremony.
