Owner brings wanted SUV seen near fire
The owner of an SUV that police were looking for in connection with an early morning fire Oct. 26 at Legends Bar & Grill has come forward. The owner is from Mishawaka, Ind., Michigan State Police said Tuesday. He has an attorney and has declined an interview with investigators.
The car was believed to be a Ford Explorer, a Jeep Cherokee or a similar style and was near the building when it was on fire, according to Michigan State Police in Niles. Police do not know how many people were in the SUV when it was seen near the scene of the fire.

Be aware of scammer selling car coupons
A local food bank is warning Elkhart County residents of a possible fake fundraiser which involves selling car coupon books. The scammer is selling the books, saying a portion of the sale will go to the "Northern Indiana Food Bank."
The actual name of the food bank based in South Bend is the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, and the fundraiser is not approved for the organization. Audition to sing in Christmas Cabaret
Anyone wishing to sing a Christmas song during Bristol's Heartfelt Christmas Cabaret is asked to audition at 7 p.m. Thursday in the old King's General Store building, 110 E. Vistula Street.
Those wishing to audition should bring a Christmas song to sing. There will also be music books at the audition to choose from. Do not bring recorded music.
Participants do need to bring a complete list of conflicts from Nov. 13 through Dec. 5.
The cabaret will be at 6 and 10 p.m. Dec. 5. Proceeds from the program will benefit the Bristol Opera House.

Meeting on H1N1 for Hispanic population
Local health officials will conduct a meeting on the H1N1 flu in Spanish from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday to inform Elkhart County's Hispanic population about the H1N1 virus.
Details will include an overview of the virus, details on flu activity in Elkhart County, practical tips on what to do when experiencing symptoms and vaccine recommendations.
The meeting will be at the Elkhart General Health Education Center, 2222 Rieth Blvd., Goshen, and will be hosted by Elkhart General Hospital, the Elkhart County Health Department and Heart City Health Center. Reservations are not necessary.

Book drive for those who are unemployed
Santa's Pantry, a local nonprofit organization, is hosting a book drive to gather books to be given to those unemployed in Elkhart and St. Joseph counties.
Santa's Pantry will kick off the drive, "Santa's Shoppers Pay It Forward Event," from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday at Borders Books and Music, 4230 Grape Road, Mishawaka.
Kids are invited to participate in craft activities and to dress up in their prince and princess outfits for a parade at 2 p.m. Saturday. Storytelling with Santa will be at 5:15 p.m. Friday and at noon, 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday. The event also will feature a silent auction, book signings by local authors and a free performance of "Christopher's Christmas" at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Santa's Pantry is requesting new books and, to encourage people to donate, is offering coupons for 10 percent off at Borders for use this weekend.

Free car safety seat checks from police
The Goshen Police Department in conjunction with the Automotive Safety Program, Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana University School of Medicine and the Governors Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving, announce free car safety seat checks.
Anyone wanting a car seat checked can stop in at the Goshen Police Department 111 E. Jefferson St., or call 533-8661 and schedule an appointment with one of the certified safety technicians.
There's a low-income family program for anyone needing a new seat, a seat check or a replacement, and officers also provide educational information during the safety seat checks. The program runs through the end of September 2010.
