INDIANAPOLIS -- Believe it or not, some people leave and forget to take their money with them.

The Internal Revenue Service is looking for 1,377 Indiana taxpayers who are due a combined $1.3 million in refund checks. The U.S. Postal Service returned the payments to the IRS because of mailing address errors.

"Indiana taxpayers should not miss out on getting their money back," said Jodie Reynolds, IRS Spokesperson. "The IRS makes it as easy as possible for taxpayers to update their addresses and claim their refunds."

Undeliverable refund checks for Indiana taxpayers average $913 this year, compared to $797 last year. Several changes in tax law likely played a role in boosting refunds, including the First-Time Homebuyer's Credit and the Recovery Rebate Credit, among others.

To claim a returned refund, taxpayers can update their addresses either by visiting www.IRS.gov and clicking on Where's My Refund or by calling the automated line (800) 829-1954. If they want to talk to an IRS representative, they should call (800) 829-1040.

The taxpayers will have to provide:

* Social Security number of the first person listed on the tax return form

* filing status

* amount of refund shown on their 2008 return

The online tool will provide the status of their refund and in some cases provide instructions on how to resolve delivery problems.

Once the address is correct, the checks will take another four to six weeks to arrive. So relax, get comfortable and stay awhile.
