ELKHART -- A new fire engine hit the road this week, and most of the expense was paid by the federal government.

The 2009 Suphten Shield series, with a 1,500 gallon per minute pump, cost about $327,000, Elkhart Fire Chief Michial Compton said.

Eighty percent of that was covered by the federal Assistance to Firefighters grant, and Elkhart Brass donated most of the equipment to put inside.

The new engine will be at Elkhart Fire Station 4 on Oak Avenue, replacing the 1988 "Big Blue" engine that will be retired to a reserve engine.
