GOSHEN -- Maggie Walters, who just completed the sixth grade at Goshen Middle School, has been selected the state winner of the "If I were mayor ..." essay contest sponsored by the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns.

Maggie received a $1,000 college scholarship and other prizes, as well as a $100 check.

Her classmate, Isabela Torres, was a fellow northern Indiana regional winner. She received a $100 check from the Northern Indiana Mayor's Roundtable and a $250 savings bond from IACT.

Maggie and Isabela were in the same class, taught by Nicole Molitar, as well. Goshen Middle School also was awarded $100 for each winner from the mayor's roundtable and from IACT.

"It was exciting to have two of the eight finalists, and the overall winner from Goshen out of a total of 3,700 contestants," said Mayor Allan Kauffman. "It speaks well not only for the girls who were chosen, but also for the quality of teaching offered by Nicole Molitar at Goshen Middle School."

There were 3,700 essays submitted to the contest.
