CRYSTAL VALLEY KIWANIS CLUB

Earlene Nofziger and Janet Buccionne spoke Nov. 11 about Tools for Schools, a program designed to provide needed school supplies in Goshen schools. Started in 2004, Tools for Schools donates to area teachers school supplies that they normally would supply using their own money.

Today Steve Lyng, Northridge High School principal, will update the club on school business.

Meetings are at noon Wednesdays at Das Dutchman Essenhaus and are open to the public.

ELKHART COUNTY AFTER FIVE WOMEN'S CONNECTION

Members met Nov. 3 at Hubbard Hill. Linda Rider was the special speaker and shared tips on Thanksgiving food and decorating. Pamela Aldermann of Kentwood, Mich., spoke on "A Portrait of a Woman's Heart," finding hope in the midst of the storm.

The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1. The evening is entitled "A Victorian Home Christmas Tour," with a tour of the beautiful 1868 Italianate home at 1105 W. Vistula St. (U.S. 120) in Bristol. The home is on the National Registry of Historical Homes, is decorated in period furnishings and sits on the original 5-acre building site. Come and enjoy the splendor of the era, with hors d'oeuvres and the sounds of Christmas. There will also be a presentation by Ann Ulmer of Seymour, who will share "Learning What Matters and How to Achieve It."

ELKHART LIONS CLUB

To honor the club's veterans on Nov. 11, Al Norris, pianist extraordinaire, led a medley of service hymns. Sporting his uniform, Jack Donis was the envy of all who had outgrown theirs and was given immunity from fines.

Joyce Menchinger, Samaritan Center psychotherapist, presented an overview of the center's history and services. Founded in 1972 by Dr. Burton Kintner and the Rev. R.J. Ross, Elkhart's Samaritan Center was the model for the now more than 100 centers throughout the United States and Japan. Besides the original site at First Presbyterian Church, there are now five satellite facilities at churches throughout Elkhart County. The Center is non-denominational and provides private counseling and educational services.

Future programs: Today, Joyce Forman, YMCA; Nov. 25, District Gov. Bill Wallace; Dec. 2, Bill Van Patten, Yesteryear in Flight; Dec. 9, Bill Darwin, Mike Maloney, Allen Strike.

ELKHART LUNCHEON OPTIMIST CLUB

Julie Robison and Connie Standlhske are chairs for the 2010 Casino Night fundraiser. Information was passed around of various positions to be filled. The theme will be Optimist Safari Night on March 19 at the Matterhorn Banquet and Conference Center.

Upcoming: Youth for Christ speaker Thursday, Salvation Army bell-ringing Dec. 4 at Wal-Mart on Ash Road, Breakfast with Santa Dec. 5. There will be no meeting on Thanksgiving.

ELKHART MORNING ROTARY CLUB

Marty Victor led the Nov. 12 meeting, and it was noted that Dave Beaverson was made a happy person because raisins were found to add to his oatmeal. Elaine Yoder led a moving invocation in remembrance of all the young lives touched by Irv Polk. Michelle Wang was the lucky recipient of the membership tiger.

Chuck Bueter, Michiana Astronomical Society, presented Galileo Galilei at the meeting. Galileo, in full period regalia, educated members on the development of the telescope and how it was used in determining that the solar system did not revolve around the Earth. The telescope celebrates its 400th birthday this year, the International Year of Astronomy.

The Honorable Jack Woodworth continued his sergeant-at-arms duties by quizzing members on the benefits of Rotary for the member, the community and the world. He also noted that the Salvation Army has approximately 1,300 requests for assistance in the Adopt-a-Family program, and typically less than 200 families will be matched.

ELKHART NOON KIWANIS CLUB

Attendees were greeted Nov. 11 by newest member, R.J. Butler, along with Doris Stevens. Susan Bartush entertained the club as K-comedian. Jodi Nelson, president, informed members that the Kiwanis presence at the Elkhart Chamber's Biz-Expo was a huge success. Member Paul Randall led a special tribute for the club's veterans to commemorate Veterans Day. Committee and project chairs utilized time to meet with their committees.

ELKHART NOON ROTARY CLUB

A special recognition was given Nov. 9 to Kurt Janowsky for opening the Matterhorn Banquet and Conference Center for the Salvation Army Thanksgiving Day Elkhart Community Dinner. Chuck Grodnick was sergeant-at-arms and ceremoniously picked on just about every football team in the Big Ten. Honorary Rotarian Phil Penn received a Paul Harris award for his contribution to the Paul Harris Foundation.

Dan Ryan, district chairman, informed members about the many polio and water projects Rotary has been involved in for the past years and Rotary's dedication to eliminating polio and creating cleaner water for the world.

EXCHANGE CLUB OF GOSHEN

The club met Nov. 12 at The Old Mill restaurant. Guests included Don and Barbara Reber and Sara Showalter. Reuel Lehman won the CAPS 50/50, his spouse, Agnes, won the attendance prize for Reuel's attending and Don Lukeman presented the $2 bill to Reuel (a trifecta?). Nancy Keller presented international exchange student Yoshiki Hirose from Japan as guest speaker. Hirose is a high school senior who arrived in August to spend a year with the Kellers. He spoke no English on arrival and communicated with a computer program for translation. An excellent soccer player, he joined the Concord team and helped win a sectional championship, learning enough English along the way to be able to effectively present a Power Point program of his activities to date.

GOSHEN NOON KIWANIS CLUB

Visitors at the Nov. 10 meeting included Mandy Gerber with Holly Yoder, Key Club members from Fairfield and Goshen; Gene Lange with John Huber; and Loren Eash, a guest of C.J. Yoder.

Announcements included Salvation Army Pancake Day tickets are available. Also, food boxes are available to donate meals. The club will "adopt" three families and help with items for the Graceful Living transition home on North Sixth Street.

Speaker Dean Hupp, a retired Miles executive and past county councilman who explained the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). He and club member Jim Welz are involved in the Elkhart County organization to help small business operators and those planning to start a small business. They are some of the 12,400 volunteers across all 50 states. SCORE is a resource partner of the Small Business Administration, funded by the U.S. Congress. The Elkhart group serves people in LaGrange and Kosciusko counties. They have a goal of helping start 1 million new businesses over the next seven years. Volunteers work at the Elkhart and Goshen Chamber of Commerce offices.

INDIANA ETA CHAPTER, DELTA THETA CHI SORORITY

Members met Oct. 27 for a Halloween Rush Party at Betty Vaughn's home. Vaughn, Sandy Pixey, Susan Yoder and Anna Kridler co-hosted a progressive dinner, and all enjoyed the good food and shared information about each other that no one knew before. Centerpieces were prizes at each table.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF ELKHART COUNTY

Rob Staley, The Crossing executive director, will speak about alternative schools at today's meeting meeting at the Matterhorn Banquet and Conference Center. Social time begins at 11:30 a.m., luncheon at noon. Information: Sharon Schafer at 264-7281.

MAPLE CITY TOASTMASTERS CLUB

The club had its weekly meeting Nov. 10 with Dennis Wenzel presiding as toastmaster. Dale Hoover opened and Chuck Kurk closed the meeting. Tim Loutzenhiser was timekeeper, Deb Ehret was general evaluator and Chuck Kurk served as lexicologist/grammarian and Ah-counter.

Meetings are from 12:10 to 1 p.m. Tuesdays at the Goshen Chamber of Commerce and are open to the public.

MAPLECREST LADIES BRIDGE CLUB

Nancy Lantz won first place at the last meeting. Pat Reiner and Ginny Herron tied for second. Sharon Anglemyer was hostess.

MARRIED WOMEN'S CLUB

The club met Nov. 10 at Central Christian Church. Kate Stutsman, past president, was presiding officer. Ora Nelson gave the invocation and benediction. Co-hostesses Maxine Stump and Virginia Comer's committee included Jodi Comer, Bea Everly and Marilyn Grubb. Joyce Carmien, Norma Osborne and Gloria Leipzig gave reports.

Beverly Tudor introduced Darlene Adkins, who gave a program on the

author and illustrator Beatrix Potter, giving Beatrix's background and her many talents. Adkins read "The Tale of Tom Kitten," which was first written in 1907.

In December the group will donate to Church Community Services to help in their food program.

RED FEATHER GALS, RED HAT SOCIETY

Seven members enjoyed a Halloween carry-in dinner Oct. 24 at Betty Whetstone's home. Phyllis Holm won the best costume award. The club's traveling mouse has visited the homes of Joann Ray, Pam Smith, Phyllis Holm and Carolyn Smith.

On Nov. 14 five members will travel to Perrysburg, Ohio, for a Red Hat luncheon.

Upcoming: Chapter luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 24 at Red Lobster; Christmas party at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 12 at Country Table in White Pigeon.

ROTARY CLUB OF GOSHEN

Six Goshen High School seniors were guests at the Nov. 6 meeting. Bob Schrock introduced guest speaker Dzung Nguyen, owner of Goshen Buick GMC Hyundai. Dzung shared the moving story of his journey from childhood in war-torn Vietnam to his present life as a successful business owner in Goshen. Dzung lauded the freedom he encountered upon emigration to the United States, where he chose to invest himself in language study and assimilation into the culture, becoming an American citizen in 1980.
