They've come a long way from east L.A., and on Nov. 21 the enduring Chicano band Los Lobos brings its unique sound to Goshen.
The musicians' 7:30 p.m. concert at Sauder Hall is part of the college's noteworthy Performing Arts Series. Coming off of a Hispanic Heritage Month performance at the White House, band members David Hidalgo, Conrad Lozano, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas Cougar Estrada and Steve Berlin will bring to Elkhart County their ubiquitous theme song "La Bamba" and a host of other numbers that defy promoters' attempt to classify them as one genre or another.
Los Lobos came together 35 years ago in east L.A., where the rock and roll atmosphere was heavily flavored with Mexican folk music. Their style evolved to include Spanish, rhythm and blues and country influences, while their lyrics tend toward conscience-raising but don't make obvious forays into any political arena.
They've recorded dozens of songs in both English and Spanish -- sometimes on the same album. "La Bamba" and "La Pistola y el Corazón" are readily associated with the group. But their most recent release, "Los Lobos Goes Disney," takes them where few musicians have dared to go.
Reinterpreting Disney songs is no mean feat, but Los Lobos' attempt infuses Spanish, rock and roll, jazz and Zydeco styles into the classics until they're palatable for the over-10-years-old crowd. That ability to incorporate and adapt different styles into their body of work is key to their longevity, which according to Rolling Stone magazine rivals that of Irish sensation U2.
Tickets for the event are still available for $25-$45. For more information contact the Goshen College Welcome Center at 535-7566 or welcomecenter@goshen.edu. Sauder Concert Hall is on the GC campus, 1700 S. Main St., Goshen.
