Cold and wet conditions have created challenges for farmers who are doing their best to harvest and plant crops. Amid all the concerns being faced on the farm, safety is another thing that must be taken into consideration. It can sometimes taken for granted -- becoming too comfortable and confident about something because it is done so often can be risky. Being reminded from time to time helps keep safety fresh on our minds.
Many farming accidents occur during planting and harvesting. During this fall season, some farmers are harvesting corn and soybeans, while others are planting winter wheat. Equipment safety is important during this time -- in addition to any other time on the farm. All equipment should be in good working condition and used properly. For example, tractors should be equipped with a rollover protective structure (ROPS) and PTO shields should be in good working condition or replaced if damaged. Also, anyone who is too young or does not have the proper experience should not be on or near farming equipment for any reason.
Good equipment and clear guidelines to follow are only part of the total picture of farm safety. Another thing to remember is that anyone using the equipment and working the fields should be alert at all times. Making it a habit to take a break or perhaps stop for a quick snack can do wonders for awareness and may help break that robotic feeling that can creep over you while harvesting and planting. Don't forget to listen to your body and follow its lead. Pushing yourself past the limit is not worth the possible dangers.
