Let's discuss 'Elkhart County property at risk if tax is unpaid'.

Noon today is the deadline for property owners to pay delinquent taxes or risk losing their property during an auction on Monday. In October, Elkhart County gave legal public notice that more than 3,200 homeowners and businesses had failed to pay their 2007 property taxes or special assessments. The properties were to be auctioned off at a real estate property tax sale scheduled for Monday.

It seems to me given the times and issues many are faced with, including "The County", County Officials should have considered opening office(s) for a half of a day on Friday for those that one more pay check would have made a difference for, and a County that is lagging in collections required to function.

I go down today to pay the back taxes on my home. Taxes not even owed by me!!!! These are from the previous owners that either sunterra properties didn't pay, the closing agent didn't pay..... my guess.....if they were doing estimated bills last year this slipped thru the cracks and that sunterra did pay the amount "ESTIMATED" and the closed company saw that the "ESTIMATED" was paid and no one realized that there was going to be an addition amount......which I now get to pay

The thing is, the homes going up for sale are ones that are more than a year delinquent on taxes.  This means that people probably aren't going to, or can't, pay these taxes.  Quite a few of these homes are also vacant due to foreclosure, so there isn't anyone to pay.  If the County opens for that half day (or many of the banks that accept tax payments), who is going to pay for those employees?  That's right...tax money that the county doesn't have.  Puts everyone in a bind, I would think.

How is this different from looting?

Why is our government insisting on stealing houses in the middle of a recession?

You ask who's going to pay those employees if they come in on Friday to allow people to pay their taxes. This may be news to you but those people are already getting paid with taxpayer money for having that day off. It's one of their several paid holidays. I'm not sure when the day after Thanksgiving was declared a Holiday unless of course you're a government worker. Good thing the tax deadline wasn't due on an election day. Another paid Holiday for government workers.

As a non-government worker who is off Friday, I scoff at this post.

If your employer asked you to come in on Friday because some important business needed to be taken care of that day to take care of their customers would you say yes or no.

I'd work from home most likely, but point taken.

As of June this year, there were over 3,500 documented vacant houses in Elkhart County.
Some were lost due to foreclosures, others were simply abandoned because the owners could not make their payments.
As of this November the number of vacant houses has grown to an estimate of 4,500 vacant homes.

Now the County is threatening to "take" these properties and sell them at a Sheriff's sale?

And to add insult to injury? The estimated property taxes on these and YOUR homes has been elevated to offset the new property tax cap that the State put in place.

Like you, my property taxes climbed sky high..doubled...and if I could sell my property for what the County appraised it at? I'd sell it right now!
I even appealed my new tax rate with the aid of a well known Realtor
I went to the Treasurer's office and presented my case with written property values laid out in black and white.
What did I get? Nothing. I was denied. I wasted three hours of my time trying to appeal my doubled property taxes.

What we are seeing is not less spending by County officials. Their fiscal policy is a sham. Just double the alleged worth of YOUR property and tax you accordingly.
Did we need a 96 Million dollar jail? Do we need a new 6.5 Million dollar Sheriff Dept. office complex on CR 26?

Do we need a Prosecutor's office that went from one full time Attorney and one part time investigator to a Prosecuting Attorney who has numerous full and part time Attorneys on the dole? And do we need three or four full time Investigators, replete with their unmarked, undercover vehicles that we taxpayers provide?

Do we need a Health Dept. that nitpicks every little ice cream shop that pops up in this county?

And I have to wonder...do we need half of the politicians we have ?
Look at them...most have run for two or more offices in their career. Some switch horses in the middle of the stream and do so often.

I'd like to see a fresh face in local politics. An honest face...
