Let's discuss 'The Elkhart Project: Abandoned puppies and kittens also feel recession'.

Each day at 5 p.m., staff members of the Humane Society of Elkhart County close the animal shelter and hold a meeting. And each day, like clockwork, they begin hearing a "thump, thump, thump" from outside. That is the sound of pets being abandoned by owners who either do not want them or cannot care for them anymore.

I JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND...I HAVE BEEN UNEMPLOYED FOR 13 MONTHS. & HAVE CUT BACK ON MANY THINGS I ONCE THOUGHT NECESSARY..I HAVE NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT GIVING ONE OF MY 7 CATS UP..
I TOOK THEM IN AS MY RESPONSIBILITY & AS A RESPONSIBILITY,OWE THEM A LOVING HOME.. NO DIFFERENT THEN A CHILD..IT WAS MY CHOICE..
I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW ANYONE CAN LIVE WITH THE THOUGHT OF EUTHANIZING A PET..I COULD NEVER EVER FORGIVE MYSELF...

instead of killing the dogs, why wont you give them to good homes, instead of trying to charge 140.00 to adopt one people want these animals but cannot afford the adoption price...give them away as christmas gifts and ask for donations i am sure happy parents getting a cheaper dog, puppy, or whatever will benefit more than killing them

Absolutely agree!  I would have to say the adoption fees are a little high.  Have you seen the app to adopt?  It makes you feel like you are on America's Most Wanted!  We have the right to refuse adoption, if the animal isn't being cared for under our guidelines we can reclaim the animal.  Good grief!  Can't you run specials?  half price adoptions, 2 for 1, something!  Anything has to be better than killing them all!

We are a throwaway society. That is just the way it is. Millions of children are left with ageing grandparents every year which is nothing short of abandonment. Should we be suprised that pets are abandoned?

Your basic Humane Society would prefer to kill than place. That is just their train of thought. That is why they make adoption such a mangled obsticle course.  They will never admitt it but that is the real truth.

I had occasion to see the Humane Society's adoption form yesterday, and you're quite right. I know the HS has an obligation to do their best to place the animals properly, but it's amazing the paperwork that has to be filled out for this. It's simply far too intrusive. They need to back off the Gestapo tactics.

As far as specials, I know someone who recently adopted a dog and they were given the option of taking "2 for the price of 1", so they are already doing that. For myself, I adopted two cats from the HS almost 10 years ago, brought them home, and they immediately got sick, necessitating trips to the vet. That, combined with all the paperwork rigamarole and high cost of adoption had led me to decide to not adopt from the HS again.

And a word about the pet doors... From the tenor of the article, it sounds like the staff of the HS doesn't like the idea of the pet doors, when statements like 'drop it off responsibly' are being made. If that's the case, why have them at all?

RI.

Honestly , if they would lower the adoption fee a little bit, and not be so stringent on some of the rules you have to comply with , they might find more people adopting from them.

I understand the reasoning behind the rules but we don't all have perfect families and perfect environmentsm but many of us have a great deal of time and love and energy to give.

It's possible to provide food and love and shelter for an animal but the initial adoption fee is just out of reach for most of us, especially now.

For those of you who are needing to let your animals go to another home, consider Craigslist, and you can actually interview the people who are willing to take your pets.

and they are more likely to adopt them if you only ask a small rehoming fee instead of hundreds the shelter asks for.

I have 6 cats, and all are fixed, I had two dogs also, (both of whom passed away of old age) and two ferrets.

I am unemployed and I manage to take care of them all.

The shelter is a death sentence, they'd rather euthanize than give up that whopping fee.
