Let's discuss 'The few remaining brick-paved streets inspire some love and hatred among locals'.

You won't hear any cross words out of Janet Randall stemming from the well-worn roadway in front of her State Street home. "I like the bricks," she said, standing outside the home of her friend, Toni Brayton, who lives one block over on Division Street, also a brick street.

Please! leave the bricks alone! Elkhart has little else going for it anymore,. so please leave a little charm of the past,  a few brick streets.

Keep the Bricks.

Back in the depression (the other depression).  Workers were hired to turn the bricks over on these very streets to put bread on the table.  Seems to me that we have enough people needing help to make it happen again.  It was a government program WPA or CCC.  Of coarse it was back when the government knew it worked for the people not the other way around.

It would be nice to leave the streets the way they are, but when the sewers start to back up and the water line start to break, who will be crying help and fix this mess? There are signs of this happening now! If you want your streets to be brick, then when it comes time to fix what ever is wrong under them, maybe you should pay for it yourselves! I don't want to pay $100's of dollars to fix someone elses street when the city won't even fix my street. For 3 years they have said they would redo our street. The sewer line needs replaced badly. But someone elses street always comes first. " I guess it isn't who you know !" Now by 2012 All the sewers have to be redone or the city losses its government match funding. the government WON'T pay to make it a brick street again, nor will I! When I dug up my back yard I found over 100 street brick! Did they use the old bricks as fill in in spots of peoples yards? This house was built in 1900 to 19010 and my yard was full of these brick. The bricks you want to keep!

They may have been great and economical at community correct at the time, but now it's time to come into the 20th century! If you want the bricks, maybe you would also like to level out my back yard for the damage they caused! We need to save the money, not spend more in the wrong places! Sounds like Obama lives in Elkhart!

A) It's the 21st century.

B) Many people (myself included) use paving bricks as decorative features in gardens, backyards, etc.

C) The bricks didn't hurt anything...you tore up your yard...

D) Bricks definitely add charm to a neighborhood to people who prefer 'charming' neighborhoods over skyscrapers and 'projects'.

E) I agree that we are in hard times right now and shouldn't be spending money on frivolous things like re-laying the bricks.

This goes into another problem...the cost of union work. Governments hire unions and unions take advantage of the government by charging excessive amounts of money to do a job. If the government were to contract private companies to do this work and actually reject the ridiculously high bids (by both union and private companies), the cost wouldn't be so outrageous and ordinary people could work up a sweat and get food on the table.

This government is fat and bloated and most Americans have become accustomed to being spoon-fed. If the road needs to be dug up for a sewer line job, leave it as a dirt road...go ahead and make a couple signs that say "BUMP" and leave them there until the economy turns around.

The United States Government (Federal, State and Local) don't use their heads anymore...it's really sad.

Have you drove down State Street lately? My in-laws live on it and it is horrible. The lady in the story, Jan, does not have a car to drive so what does she care. Tear the roads up and make them driveable.

Well I guess your one of the smart one's! As I said I had to dig up my yard because it was sinking!. You just don't add dirt on top till you find out why it is happening! I agree the bricks look nice, but you don't burie them in the ground to let someone else deal with them! I you want them under your yard thats fine with me. But next time understand the meaning before you just type, and read the hole thing. As I said they might be nice to look at, but they cause to much damage for sewer and water pipes! If you want the bricks in the street, I'm sure the city would give them to you so you can put them in your yard!!
