Let's discuss 'City, town, Elkhart County officials face tough choice: Raise taxes or cut services'.
Cutting services or boosting local income taxes were the biggest options discussed when a group of leaders from the county and several cities and towns got together Tuesday to talk about the impact of property tax cuts.

| We could start by cutting the three county commissioners.All we hear is RAISE TAXES.Why are we paying that extra 1% sales tax ?I thought that was to offset the tax cap. That tax cap ,saved me , $15.88 over last years tax.And now they are talking about higher income tax.You know sometime there has to come an end to MORE TAX.

| A LARGE chunk of money could also be raised if the ban on taxing churches was dumped, too. Churches have, for way too long, gained greatly by being "tax exempt" in the name of the lord in order to propagate their agenda.

instead of raising taxes, why not control spending? doesn't appear there is much control coming from the politicians.

| My heart bleeds. Everyone else in Elkhart Co has to due with less, so how about the gov. Are you reading this Mr. politician? CUT SERVICES and DO NOT RAISE TAXES! You people don't get it, the first thing on their list was a new TAX. Shame on you. I will be glad to volunteer my time to come in a go over the budget line by line. I bet I can reduce the cost. It's like talking to a brick wall. It's not your money, it's mine and I want to keep it. CUT SPENDING.

I agree with ya gibby... But I betcha there's a dozen to one who will turn around and complain about dodging a pothole or about the leaves that fell from their own tree's that are still not picked up by the city.
People like to complain.
If hindsight is 20/20...Then why do we look ahead instead of behind?

Let's discuss the possibility of cutting EXPENSES and stop SPENDING! How about DOWNSIZING government! You know it's a proven fact that TAX CUTS actually create more revenue for the government!

Getting an analysis of how much the services provided by government agencies actually cost;
Amazing, but not surprising This just tells me what we've always suspected- the politicians just know how to spend, spend, spend, but haven't a clue how much they are costing the taxpayer. They should know exactly what they are spending BEFORE they spend it (how much it will cost).
I also agree with the first poster- Cut 2 of the Commissioners salaries and get rid of them. One president, one governor, but three commissioners? What's out of place in that sentence?

BadBilly (11/11/2009) I agree with ya gibby... But I betcha there's a dozen to one who will turn around and complain about dodging a pothole or about the leaves that fell from their own tree's that are still not picked up by the city.
People like to complain.Billy, isn't that at the core of the spending? Unemployment and the devaluation of the housing market are two reason that tax revenue have gone down. There are more of course but, whose services would we cut? No matter what you cut, someone would feel that service was the most important thing that government does. When you talk about less government you are also talking about less services. No leaf pick up, combing fire houses, less police, less road work and repair and all those daily things that the local,state and Federal governments do cost money. The money comes from taxes. What services that are now "essential" would you cut out?

| "We need to begin looking at Local Option Income Taxes or severely cutting back" on things like parks and the health department, said Mike Yoder, one of the three county commissioners. John Letherman, president of the county council, said, though, "We don't want to be in a position where our only answer is we've got to raise taxes." People are growing very weary of all the talk of new taxes, new revenue streams instead of getting the job done. The County budget is fat and the checks and balance system is not working in Elkhart County and it continues to cost Elkhart County tax payers. The two guys above, all they do is talk about raising new taxes, or looking for new revenue streams. Of course, these two guys aren't up for re-election in 2010, but there are 4 council district seat, and a seat at the Board of Commissioners. Until this group of the 10 vote me aye men is diversified with other ways of veiwing issues, nothing is going to change. The upping of the LOIT tax would have already been a done deal now, if it weren't for the fact County Council republicans faced democrats in the 2008 fall election. These guys will be pushing hard now during this short window of time leading up to 2010 to get this pushed forward. They will be working and useing every angle available, including the Mayor's of Goshen and Elkhart...
