Let's discuss 'An Elkhart boy has the scars to prove that animal control is an important issue'.

He had just clambered over the fence enclosing his friend's yard to retrieve a baseball when it occurred. "The dog just came out of nowhere," said Dylan Tesch, speaking from the living room of his Jimtown home, five and a half years after the fact. "He just charged at me from behind."

PERSONALLY I THINK KID WAS IN THE WRONG..HE SHOULD NOT BE JUMPING FENCES TO GET A BALL..THE DOG WAS PROTECTING HIS PROPERTY,WHICH IS WHAT HE IS SUPPOSE TO DO..THE BOY SHOULD HAVE ASKED OWNERS PERMISSION TO GO IN YARD..
HARD WAY TO LEARN A LESSON..RESPECTING A NEIGHBORS PROPERTY..

I think what happen to the boy is awful but if there is a fence up the kids shouldn't be jumping it. And kids need to be taught to respect other peoples property and if they lose a ball go to the front door and ask the owner if they would get it for them. I hate seeing dogs chained up as most of the ones that are chained aren't getting any attention and lucky to have food and water as there chain tangles around the bowls and upsets them.

We have  two dogs and I want them to be able to run thats why they are in a fenced yard.  If that dog had got out of his yard and went after that boy it would have been a different story. Than home owner should have been responsible but the kid was trespassing.

He says to own a dog it should be tethered, in a cage, or not at all?!?!?!? Insane. Perhaps the boy should have not hopped a fence into someone else's yard. Your dogs should be safe in your own yard. If someone jumped into my yard, my otherwise harmless dogs, may go on the defense as well. He asked for this. I'm sorry!

You Never "chain" a dog anymore than those people "chain" the 8 year old so he wouldn't jump the fence.  Chaining a dog is cruel and just makes them crazy and mean.  Dogs should be treated with respect or don't have one!!!  Love is the key word when owning a dog or any animal.

Any breed of dog will become protective of its property.

Does anyone really believe having an animal control ordinance would have prevented this attack? Would it have kept the rope from breaking? Not going into the fenced yard would have.

If the county or city does pass an ordinance, I hope its a practical one.

I agree.  The boy was in the wrong.  Good for the dog.   The dog doesn't know from bad person to good.  He was protecting his family and home.  The boy should have known better since he was a neighbor.  Why do you think there was a fence?  duh? A responsible owner can only do so much.  Tough way to learn a lesson.  Should have knocked on the front door and ask for permission.

One attack doesn't prove anything. It doesn't prove a new law is needed while it also doesn't prove a new law is not needed.

What is needed is logical thinking about when there are attacks if owners and victims are obeying current laws. Then it should be considered if any changes are needed. Sorry to say that is not what is happening.

The boy was certainly in the wrong. He was playing in a friend's yard so it wasn't even his own yard. A hard lesson to learn, yes but has nothing to do with animal ordinance. The mother talking of the pit bull they had to put down, that it was just protecting its territory, is the exact same logic that should be applied to the German Shepard attack.

This article makes no sense. It tells the story of a tresspassing boy attacked by a dog in a fenced-in yard, tethered to a rope. Sad yes, but it is meaningless when trying to parallel it with the current animal ordinance issue. What about the dogs the family has now? Are they registered, three dogs to be in the household?

And the repeated use of the word "critter" when the word "dog" would have sufficed just throws the reader off and makes this a poorly written article.
