Let's discuss 'Late tax bills, late payments and more headaches for Elkhart County'.

Without a job, Barbara Ong won't be able to pay her entire property tax bill by next week's deadline. That means she'll face an extra charge when she finally saves enough to pay the whole thing, probably at the end of 2009 or early next year. "My big thing is, I didn't want to pay a penalty," said the Middlebury woman.

Did nobody read the Truth article in which John Letherman asked for higher gasoline taxes for our Highway fund?

Since Letherman is fairly wealthy and seems to have an inside track on County Government, how about HE pays more?

Maybe this cocky little rooster should explain some of his real estate dealings that seem to be on conflict with his political office.

The DLGF points to the fact that we could have implemented a payment system -- but fails to mention the horrendous cost to tax payers and bureaucracy involved ti implement this wonderful sounding solution.

A better solution would be to put control over payment timing and late fees into the hands of the Treasurer's office or County Council.

If the county makes a mistake on a tax bill - the tax payer should not have to pay a fee -- the state says thou shalt pay a fee.

If the county is late getting out tax bills (whether by their own problems or the result of delays at DLGF) - the taxpayer should have additional time to pay -- the state says thou shalt not.

If the county makes a mistake and your property ends up in the tax sale -- the taxpayer should not have to pay any fees -- the state says thou shalt pay the fee.

I am asking our state legislators to make statutory changes to put more control back into the hands of local government -- in direct contrast to where the legislature has been heading the last decade, incrementally taking away local control.

Just wait until you have to pay a fine for not having health insurance on top of not being able to pay your taxes. Sounds to me that there will be a lot more people living on the streets.

they can be LATE sending out tax bill , but if you are late paying them, then they have the nerve to assess a penalty? how about them paying a penalty for being late?  Wouldn't that be something?

knowing that a tax hike would not go over well with the electorate ....  they squeeze the window to pay, hike the penalties and such ---- and, they likely collect more for this scheme than a tax increase......  learned it from wall street, CITI, Chase and BOA

it is an intentional frustration of ability to perform as per the terms.....  very profitable scheme

I read somewhere that next year there will only one day to pay your taxes and that payment will not be accepted except on this one day......  miss this due date and the penalty is 100% of the tax due plus interest compounded hourly.

The new due date -----  February 30th  ---- I think,......  might have been the 31st

With all sympathy for everyone impacted by the economic climate, tax bills are due November 10. They're theoretically due every year on May 10 and November 10 (I believe that's the exact date [the 10th], isn't it?)

If one doesn't have the money because of job loss; etc., that's a different matter, but to whine and cry that the county should give more time to pay because they sent out the bills late is missing the point. The bills are due on the 10th and that should be part of anyone's prudent planning. Bad planning on your part should not constitute an emergency on someone else's part.
