Let's discuss 'Old Elkhart County plat maps reveal some surprises'.

Sometimes things go to according to plat. Sometimes not. Early plat maps of Elkhart County, some never before seen by local surveyors, are on display in a temporary exhibit at the Elkhart County Historical Museum. The 170-year-old drawings tell some tales, including one about the city that never was.

This is an awesome find. This is one exhibit that I'm going to check out. I often wondered who thought of the road set up to start with and to see it changed to curves etc following farm lines and river roads.

I read a while back in some of the tourist info on Elkhart, that originally Dunlap was to be the county seat because it was in the center of the county. It was only after the western part of the county was annexed to St. Joseph county, because it was too swampy and wet for anyone to use it, that the county seat development was moved to Goshen. This may have something to do with the town that never was, Harrisburg.

For once, a positive post series. Love it.

The Elkhart County Historical Museum is a hidden jewel. Even if you have just a few minutes, go by the Bristol site and see what's incredible about the county. You can find out what your property was a hundred years ago. How your employer started out. If you need to take your kids somewhere, this is the place. And if you are mechanically inclined or nostalgic, it's inspirational. Part of Elkhart County Parks, for all of us, to enjoy. A quality of life asset to be proud of.

It has been a long while since I have read anything about the history of the west side of our county and how that land moved to St Joe. That would be a great story to tell again.

What would Elkhart County look like if we still had all that land? Granger and Mishawka would all be in Elkhart County?
