Let's discuss 'Some local unemployed workers do not compute'.

Gerardo Alvarado never had to use a computer to collect a paycheck, but to file for unemployment benefits, he has to battle the electronic device every week. Sunday afternoon was another ordeal. Standing over a terminal at the Pierre Moran branch of the Elkhart Public Library, Alvarado first needed help logging onto his account. Then when the text exceeded the size of the screen, he began to

"she believes the workers could be better served by going to the WorkOne office."

Well then maybe WorkOne should close one day during the week and open on Sunday. If there is an increased need on Sunday WorkOne should be the one to meet those needs.

As far as I know the library volunteered to take this on a a public service to the community.  While it seems as though now they are inconveniecned and wish to drop it, if the state had held up their end of the bargain they would have done something about this a long time ago.

One thing I do find interesting is that we are told that we have a skilled workforce, but many don't know how to operate a mouse on the computer.  Is that really skilled?

The way I read it, the library does want to provide the service, but in conjunction with WorkOne, not as unpaid employees of WorkOne doing their work for them so they can enjoy their weekend.

The obvious solution is to make Monday the first day benefits can be applied for...

As for the "skilled workforce", I know we have a some great workers here.  Unfortunately, we also have some whose skills seem to be in the area of playing the system.  Make them complete the other services at WorkOne to be eligible for benefits!

I am very skilled on the computer, but I know that these unemployed individuals have trade skills that I have no knowledge of. Everyone is skilled in different areas and to criticize someone for not having knowledge of something that you are fluent with is unkind. The unemployment website can be difficult at times because it is not a web-based program, which can make navigation troublesome even for the knowledgeable computer user. I have a laptop and the font can be very small which makes errors in filing somewhat commonplace until you get familiar with the system. Patience and kindness are becoming lost in the current environment and we need to put ourselves in the other person's shoes and find some empathy.

The missing half of the headline:

"... and Many Others Who Do Are Still Unemployed Too."

"The society which over-rewards people who simply happen to be standing in the right place at the right time will waste its effort in a constant jostling match to be lucky, rather than good."

If the library did not want to offer help they would have not opened Pierre Moran branch an hour earlier just to have all computers available for filing. The point is that WorkOne should be involved in this need. They are the appointed place to handle this for the state. Why can't WorkOne open on Sundays to help with the increased need?

"Why can't WorkOne open on Sundays to help with the increased need?"

They probably get paid double time for working on Sunday's.  That and they are based in Indy and history hows that if it just doesn't happen in Indy then it doesn't happen.

Some of you guys throw rockets like kids throw peas. For those who may not be aware changes have been made in many northeast Indiana counties as it relates to WorkOne... If you take a close look at who is running what, you will see that new faces are in place. Herein lays the problem. I think the last numbers put the county at 18.8% out of work as reported. Adjust in 4 to 5% that are no longer counted, and the number becomes 23.8%... Look at the cities alone, and the number becomes higher... The real problem however, is as some try to paint a positive pictures, we are far from being thru this mess. Until there is a second taking on Wall Street, the DOW hitting 7000 again, the NAS 1000, we will all continue to hit our heads against a brick wall. Back to WorkOne... I am not one to defend the Daniels' administration very often, but when you consider the numbers these folks are dealing with, and the fact many have never touched a keyboard or a mouse in their life, things could be much worse then they are today.

Herein lies the proof that some people are not savy enough to work computers. Ok, now lets get work and come up with some ideas that we can get out there and help these people. The city with a heart!

I and zirf32 are looking for ways to help and we have mentioned this on another post.
