I have a curious question... Does the county ordinance contain the language sought by supporters of the failed ordinance? I am assuming not, as it would have made this a moot point..., however you know what it is to assume. What about the City of Elkhart? Again, I don't know, just asking. I will say on what ever side of the issues you stand, Elkhart County (Middlebury & Goshen) have shown us all how the system for the people, by the people is still working in this 233 year old country of ours.

Barry -- I have been wondering the same and if I can remember to ask- find out if we even have a County Civil Rights ordinance. If we do - I doubt it has any language related to sexual orientation, this is a relatively new issue.

I am under the impression all the other civil rights addressed in the current Goshen ordinance are already covered by federal law, so we may not have any county ordinance as it would be needlessly duplicative.

I have a small issue with this story -- While it is true the community is "deeply divided" over this particular issue, why make the assumption this division translates into a deeply divided community?

I believe we can all come together to discuss important and controversial issues, disagree and still leave the meeting recognizing that we still agree on many other issues. And understanding that a community is a group of individuals with individual opinions, beliefs and ideals. A community that can sit down and discuss the tough issues in public, rather than just working to avoid the conflict, is not a divided community. It is a strong, healthy and united community.

I agree with your last paragraph, individuals will never always agree, a bit of give and take tends to center an issue we can all deal with...

As for a County Ordinance, I think you will find one, or at least a statement (resolution), as I recall it was required and tied to fedral funding, much like the wage agreement the Commissioners sign every year. Davis/Bacon, Bacon/Davis... which ever it is.

Anybody know about the City of Elkhart?

I have a question.  Why are some people homosexual or identify with a different gender?

Depends on who you ask.  The Nature/Nurture debate has been going on for years.

Some people (Nature) believe you are born with brain chemistry that makes you homosexual; others (Nurture) believe that environmental influences during childhood and adolescence can make you homosexual.

And then, there are the backward types who believe that gay people just wake up one day and make a concious decision to be gay.  'Cause, you know, they don't have enough grief in their life already.

Barry,

The council made a pointed out in a press release that the only communities in the state that had this ordinance were Indianapolis, Ft. Wayne, Lafayette, West Lafayette, Tippecanoe County and Bloomington.
