Let's discuss 'Elkhart council on the verge of banning pit bulls'.

While an animal control ordinance the City Council will consider in the coming weeks significantly reshapes 20 years of laws, there's one part of the proposal that likely will be the focus of attention. The legislation would ban pit bulls and crossbreeds of pit bulls, except for residents who now own the dogs and register them within 180 days of the ordinance becoming law.

Thank You Elkhart Council ..... My wife & two Wheatens were attacked by a Pit Bull a few years back. Luckly all survived although the mental fear stays with you.

I resent having to carry Mace in my own neighborhood becuse of the lack of responsibility displayed by some animal owners.

Although I would prefer legislation that focuses on the Human responsibility rather than banning the animal, I am impressed with the speed that Elkhart Goverment has displayed in taking control of an "Out of Control" situation.

Perhaps this will help and prompt similiar action in the County

Roberson, D-at-large, said too many owners of pit bulls in Elkhart have used the dogs to terrorize or control neighborhoods.

"Shame on us for allowing this to last this long," he said. "It's time for us to realize that there are communities that live at the will and behest of these dogs."

Who are the terrorizers? Do we have names? Controlling neighborhoods? While I don't doubt that these dogs can be dangerous, I find this a little hard to believe. What neighborhoods? If this is true, it is a police matter to identify the offenders and confiscate the dogs.

Maybe he meant they use the dogs to make themselves appear intimidating in neighborhoods.

(Is this a good time to start breeding Rottweilers to sell? Just wonderin...)

I for the most part have stayed out of this discussion because on the one hand I feel that it an infringement on our right to own a specific bred of dog..........that being said I personally don't trust pit bulls and I as an individual would never own one, that also being said............ANY dog can bite and attack that is not bred specific, pit bulls simply inflict more damage when they do attack. My grandfather owned a pomeranian that would bite your hand off if you put it under the couch when he was under there. I owned the absolutely best sheltie in the world yet when a man walked through my front door without being invited in she tried to rip his arm off and that dog had never so much as growled at anyone before that. ANY dog can attack, the better odinance would be simply to enforce rules already out there. And fine the heck out of anyone who has a dog that attacks. Fine people for not having their dog on a leash. I could be wrong but don't we already have these laws on the books do we relly need more laws. Heck I've seen some poodles that were mean as heck. What people don't seem to remember is it is an animal and animals bite.

Boundaries & beliefs are nothing more than ideas or concepts that we have commited to & accepted as truth. They become the prison walls that we inadvertently construct around ourselves ----

We have a pitbull in our neighborhood by Walker Park. The owners walk the dog and encourage it to snarl and bark at my dog when it is tethered in our backyard and encourages it to go into an aggressive mode when walking it in Walker Park. I have seen many many people in the park have to pick their smaller dogs up as this punk with the pitbull walks by them because of the fear this owner is intentionally trying to cause. If that dog ever gets loose, it will without a doubt cause serious injury or death to the first living thing it finds. Registering the dog is one step but part of the registration should include a minimum amount of liability insurance to pay for damages. I can't even let my dog out on it's tether alone in my own yard anymore because of this pitbull owner. So, Dave, let me assure you, there are some owners who are in fact terrorizing their neighborhoods. At least with an ordinance in place, we can report these vicious owners and their dogs to the authorities and  have some  bite behind OUR barks.

The neigbhorhood bullies that are using these dogs to intimidate others won't stop because you ban a breed.  Ban pit bulls and then they'll start using Rottweilers to terrorize.  Ban Rotts and they'll start using Dobermans.  Ban Dobe's and they'll start using German Shepherds.

This isn't about the dogs, its about the behaviors of people.  We're trying to address the wrong problem here.

If these people are bullying with a dog, its not much different if they walk around flaunting guns or knives.

Idea!  How about making a new pit bull  dog walking park over there on Oakland near the RR underpass.  I can't think of a better use for this equipment property.

If I use the logic that most pit bull owners seem to have and apply it to my choice of pet does this work?

I have a rabid badger with a history of mental illness exhibited in the form of anger management issues.  I love my angry badger but worry about his safety so I keep him in a small box so that he does not hurt himself.  I get hours of enjoyment when I take my angry badger in a box into my fenced in backyard to play.  We play all the normal games one would play with an angry badger like trying to fetch a stick, chase a ball, or a little game I like to call "run or die" which is often played when my badger chews through his muzzle.  I love my angry badger as much as any pit bull owner loves their pet.  I would agree that my rabid angry badger would be considered a problem if he got loose but am confident that if he did get loose I could control him (as long as nobody made any sudden moves).  My unreasonable neighbors do not like my choice of pet and think that the county should ban angry badgers as pets.  I think this is silly because any animal can bite if provoked.  I once had a cute and fluffy bunny that bit my finger while trying to eat a carrot from my hand.  I was forced to clean the bite mark with bactine and quickly apply a "hello kitty" band aid.  To me this is proof that any animal can be dangerous.  The county needs to consider my right to have a pet and not single out angry badgers (profiling is wrong).  They should also consider that my pet is technically covered under the ADA as disabled due to his mental issues.  It's not his fault and any danger he presents to my neighbors is minimal in my opinion.

Pit Bulls and Rottweillers are more dangerous because of their natural aggression instinct.  This is not an opinion but is backed by a CDC study showing that these dogs account for over 50% of fatalities that are the result of a dog attack (http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/duip/dogbreeds.pdf).  You can blame the owner, the dog, or the angry badger but in the end it does not change the fact that children are being killed by these animals.  I am willing to anger every Pit Bull owner on the planet if it saves one child.
