Let's discuss 'Company plans to turn Bayer site into a renewable energy center'.
With little fanfare, a Las Vegas-based business consulting company has announced it intends to buy the Bayer campus and establish a renewable energy center that, a company representative says, will turn trash into electricity and bio-fuels. To start, the company expects it will employ about 250 people, with the maximum reaching 400 to 450.

| This sounds like another VIM situation. The jobs will be welcome but the side effects of this operation is questionable. What zoning etc has to be approved before this happens? I know this area is zoned business but what type of business?

| I don't know a darn thing about this type of operation, I just hope that city officials will exercise due diligence and make darn sure that this doesn't become another VIM or SIM.

.Not acceptable? Well then, why don't we sell it for a dollar to another non tax paying smuck like feed the children again. Have Dave "sidewalk" Miller negotiate the deal. I am sure he can find us an "acceptable" use for the rat infested, eye sore property.

It would be awful to have solar panels and wind turbines manufactured here. This is strictly an RV community, and only RV companies should come.
What the heck does "UNEXCEPTABLE" mean anyway?

| Jamie... Jamie... Being a bit factious here, and admittedly I know little about this plan, when the initial news blurb talks about how to get the trash here, I am concerned! I can already see the promise of free trash removal to the city, as long as 52 acres within the city limits can be trashed. First of all, I have first hand experience working with an international waste management company, and came within hours and minutes of signing a contract to selling a landfill operation. It was grass roots, public opinion that flipped my vote. It was committed citizens who stood hard and fast that directed the final direction of the executive. The deal was a sweetheart of a deal, at least in the short term, but the citizens were correct and prevailed. My guess is you probably remember the ink that was poured on the local rag. The tensions were high, and people were convinced they weren’t being listened to... As for Elkhart, and Elkhart County, Elkhart does not need or deserve trash and rats being imported into the city. Elkhart County has spent a blue zillion dollars to provide a service to the county, and finally there is a promise of some payback utilizing the gases to heat the Correction facility. So the answer Jamie is three fold... Location of operation, potential loss to the County operation that is providing a cost saving now it is operational, and finally... We have been known as the Music Capitol, the RV Capitol... The end story after a one year stay by MSNBC should not be the Trash Capitol, at least not within the city limits... This story has a smell to it. Call me the boy who should have grown up in Missouri, but they are going to have to show a track record to me, kind of like this Electric Motors seeking California rock status in Wacky with the reported Company CEO. I have know idea if these people have their hand out for stimulosus dollars (grants and loans), but I am very concerned. Call me a doubting Tom, I guess. My concern is we are very weakened at this time, and poor direction and choice could pro-long a bad situation.

We have had VIM and the mega shredder neighoborhood fiasco so I don't think you could be too off base. I'm not a science girl and not even trying to be so I'm pretty ignorant as to what goes into making bio energy stuff. But it would seem like it wouldn't just be ordinary landfill trash wouldn't it have to be specific type of stuff, to break it down and turn it into some sort of fuel?
