Let's discuss 'Amish are entering jobless rolls'.
Beth Sherman, executive director of the LaGrange County Chamber of Commerce, worries the March unemployment figures are an indicator of higher rates to come. The jobless rate in the rural county leaped from 17.7 percent in February to 18.9 percent in March, according to figures released Friday from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

| How many Amish people pay rent? How many of the Amish are given land by their parents/families when they grow up or get married/whatever? How indebted is the average Amish as compared to the rest of local society and is it the same type of debt? What's the average Amish utility/energy bill? They sound rhetorical, but I've often wondered these things honestly. (And I'm not making anybody's hard situation light)

| Anthropological-type curiosity. What I said kind of reads rhetorical or presumptuous but that wasn't what I meant. I partly grew up close to Topeka but still am only slightly familiar with how they as a group really are organized. I don't know any anwsers to the questions I asked above, I have a million more.

I'm sure. But to what extent and type is what I wonder about. Does anybody know what suicide rates tend to be within amish communities? "Suicide rates for the Amish of Lancaster County were 5.5 per 100,000 in 1980, about half that of the general population and a third the rate of the non-religious population" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amish The above statistic is referenced in many places on the net though I have not found the original study anywhere.
