Let's discuss 'Stimulus money will rehab runway at Elkhart airport'.

Federal economic stimulus money will pay to rehabilitate Elkhart Municipal Airport's main runway, and city officials say it's coming not a moment too soon. Runway 9/27, which was last repaired in 2001, wasn't scheduled to receive rehab funding until 2012.

It might save some jobs but it won't create any.

If they're going to dump so much money into the airport, which I can't see helping the local economy short or long term, why don't they go ahead and purchase the property West and extend it 1000 feet, as they've proposed before? That way larger jets can land and at least give us a 0.1% better chance at bringing in larger businesses.

The bottom line is if we can't get a commercial carrier in here, it's not going to help. Extending the length is the only way to have a chance at that.

"The city estimates the rehab of the 6,500-foot runway will create 250 jobs, based on a federal formula that approximates jobs created per dollar spent."

You mean government spin  federal formula isn't good enough for you?

If someone drives past there every day anyway, when this thing starts maybe you could report back with a daily head count. I'm with tiredof, this I'd have to see.

fknot, I did read where it said it was part of the money earmarked for "aviation" projects, though this is the first I've seen that clarification, if it's true.  I wonder if that is the title put on it by local or state government and is just being repeated by the press, or if it really is earmarked by federal rule. This piece doesn't make that clear.

As I understand, these specific funds were available for use of Transportation projects only.  In other words, the funds can not be used for any other project or relief.  Since the need for Elkhart's airport runway improvements were "a ready to go" project involving Transportation, application was made for that purpose. I would assume that if these funds are not used specially as requested they would have to be returned.

Thanks Mary Ann. So they are earmarked more broadly for "transportation" (roads, mass transit, etc.) and NOT specifically "aviation". That's what I was getting at.

Nancy, I know you hate this airport thing but would there be another transportation project that is past the planning stage and could go directly to the next stage and be available for work right now?
